Oaxaca Beeswax Candle - Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca

Made by Guille and Leslie of Velas Guille in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, this candle carries a craft that's been in the family for 25 years. Guille learned it from her grandmother, who made candles like this as offerings for church and for family and community celebrations, a practice the family still keeps up today.

The candles are built from beeswax sent in sheet form from Chiapas and Puebla, melted down and coloured before being shaped through repeated wax baths, a technique known as velado por capas, where each layer is added by hand to build the shell form. The flowers are shaped and assembled separately, then fixed onto the finished candle.

In Oaxaca, candles like these are traditionally lit during la contentada, a ceremony marking a couple's engagement, where the candlelight is said to represent peace and love for their future together. At home, it works just as well lit for its scent and warmth or left unlit as a piece on its own.

Please note: Handmade in wax, so no two candles are exactly alike, expect small variations in shape, colour and flower detail from piece to piece.
