Hola! We’re Carla and Constanza 👋

Two sisters from Mexico, proud of our heritage and our roots.

We feel lucky to have grown up in Mexico, surrounded by its colours, flavours and traditions. Our parents nurtured our love for culture — our dad especially, who loved travelling and often took us to the pyramids, towns and villages where history feels alive.

Some of our fondest memories are of Tepoztlán, where our family had a house and later where our dad went to live. We also spent summers in Veracruz, where our great-grand-uncle was a fisherman. These places and experiences shaped who we are and deepened our connection to Mexico’s landscapes, stories and people.

Though we now live far apart, Carla in Mexico City and Constanza in Edinburgh — we share the same passion: celebrating and sharing the incredible artistry of México’s Indigenous communities.

For centuries, artisans have been handcrafting textiles, jewellery, pottery and art that carry history, identity and tradition. Rooted in Mexico is our way of honouring that legacy — and making it part of everyday life for people around the world.

Through our shop, you can bring home beautiful handcrafted pieces inspired by Mexico’s pre-Hispanic heritage, while supporting Indigenous artisans and helping keep México’s vibrant culture alive.

Meet Carla

Young Mexican woman with long brown hair smiling, wearing a vibrant blue embroidered dress from Chiapas, standing in front of colorful floral textile backgrounds.

Carla was born and still lives in Mexico City. Traveling through the country is one of her greatest joys — discovering new cultures, meeting people and celebrating the richness of Mexico. On these journeys, she also loves connecting with the artisans who create the beautiful pieces behind Rooted in Mexico, learning their stories and traditions first-hand.

As a chef, food is her way of honouring tradition and creativity, always carrying a piece of Mexico with her. Proud of her roots, Carla expresses her heritage through the food she cooks, the clothes she wears, and the handcrafted creations she loves to support.

You’ll always find Max by her side, her dog and bestie.

Meet Constanza

Person in Cactus Oaxaca

Constanza has called Edinburgh home for the past 9 years — where she fell in love with Scotland (and a Scotsman!). Now a proud mamá, she’s raising her little one to grow up loving his Mexican roots.

Her Edinburgh home is like a little corner of Mexico — cacti, colours and memories everywhere. From her nopal tattoo to her cactus-stencilled walls, everything reflects her love for Mexican culture. She also has a weakness for mezcal and a big plate of chilaquiles, her ultimate comfort food.

Beyond Rooted in Mexico, her work focuses on empowering people to take action for the planet and its people — another reason why this project is so close to her heart.
