Handwoven by Zeferino and his family in Puácuaro, Michoacán, this heart tray is crafted from chuspata — a reed that grows along the shores of Lake Pátzcuaro and is harvested just once a year. Each strand is dried in the sun, then moistened before weaving to give it the flexibility needed to shape the design, supported by a hand-formed wire frame.

The force and precision involved are remarkable — the weave must be tight and the pattern perfectly clean for the tray to be both durable and functional. Known for its fresh, natural fragrance, chuspata is often harvested by elderly craftspeople who know the rhythms of the lake and its reeds.
