Handcrafted by Silverio in Ahuehuepan, in the Alto Balsas Náhuatl region of Guerrero, this sun mask is shaped by hand from coatecomate, the dried gourd of a native tree, continuing a craft his family has passed down for more than 30 years.

Each mask takes a day and a half to complete and comes purely from the artisan's own imagination, there's no template behind it.

Material: Coatecomate gourd, clay, whiting paste (blanco de España), glue, oil paint

Learned through: No formal training, the designs come from the artisans' own imagination rather than a set pattern. Silverio has been making masks for more than 30 years
