We found these at the Mercado de Coyoacán, one of the oldest markets in Mexico City, and fell for them instantly. Made from cartonería, papier-mâché, each skeleton is hand-painted and fully articulated, with the limbs attached by string so they can be posed sitting or hung.
Cartonería is one of Mexico's great paper crafts, used for everything from Judas figures to alebrijes and calaveras like these. The bones are painted by hand in black and white, finished with a scattering of glitter and topped with a crown of small paper flowers.
Sit them on a shelf, hang them from a window or wherever suits, calaveritas like these aren't just for Día de los Muertos, they're part of everyday life in Mexican homes, and displayed all year round in ours.
