Handwoven Chuspata Unicorn Bag – Michoacán, Mexico

Handwoven by Zeferino and his family in Puácuaro, Michoacán, this beautiful unicorn bag is crafted from chuspata, a reed that grows along the shores of Lake Pátzcuaro. Known for its fresh, natural fragrance, the chuspata is harvested only once a year, often by elderly craftspeople who know the rhythms of the lake and its reeds.

Each strand is carefully dried in the sun, then moistened before weaving to give it the flexibility needed to shape the design. The force and precision required are remarkable: the weave must be tight and the pattern perfectly clean for the bag to be both durable and functional.

More than a bag, each creation celebrates the imagination and skill of Michoacán’s artisans.

The unicorn, also Scotland’s national animal, creates a bridge between Mexican craft traditions and Scottish symbolism.

Please note: As chuspata is a natural woven fibre, small strands or fibres may occasionally pull or show — this is completely normal and part of the charm of a handmade natural product.
