The Story Behind It
Maker: Fidel & Lorena
Years practising: 50 years
Origin: San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca
Material: Barro Negro (Black clay)
Technique: Traditionally made without a potter’s wheel, hand-shaped, burnishing before firing, carved & pierced decoration and stone-polished.
Time to make: Each piece can take up to 7 days
Learned through: Family tradition
A note from the maker: Every detail on your piece is one of a kind, so please treasure it. The clay from San Bartolo Coyotepec is naturally lead-free, and its signature black colour comes from the traditional firing method – not paint or glaze.
